Spring rain this morning, light and warm and refreshing. The smell of damp earth and green things is managing to steal in through the office windows, despite the depressing brick and concrete view.

And just because there was a song thrush tuning up in a tree by the station:

John Clare, The Thrush's Nest

Within a thick and spreading hawthorn bush
That overhung a molehill large and round,
I heard from morn to morn a merry thrush
Sing hymns to sunrise, and I drank the sound
With joy; and often, an intruding guest,
I watched her secret toil from day to day -
How true she warped the moss to form a nest,
And modelled it within with wood and clay;
And by and by, like heath-bells gilt with dew,
There lay her shining eggs, as bright as flowers,
Ink-spotted over shells of greeny blue;
And there I witnessed, in the sunny hours,
A brood of nature's minstrels chirp and fly,
Glad as the sunshine and the laughing sky.

Anyone else fancy posting some poetry?

I've been doing the BBC Sex ID test. The data collected in the survey will apparently feed in to research towards a forthcoming programme about brain sex, so all of the results are couched in very tentative terms, as they should be, as this is supposed to be the research that happens before conclusions are drawn. I appreciated the explanations of why particular questions were asked, as well: this question is intended to investigate the claim that ... etc. Nevertheless, I don't know enough about the current state of scientific research to know whether they're conspicuously leaving out anyone's theories. There was a question about the respondent's highest qualification, but none about performance in particular academic subjects, which could have been an interesting line of research. I'm also sceptical about the neatness of the averages in the final scores (50 each way just seems to be a little too tidy) and I'd question the form of some of the test. Interesting nevertheless.
