A recent post by [livejournal.com profile] sartorias on playground rhymes has got me thinking about the playground games I remember from my schools. The first thing I realised was that once I started thinking about it, there were an awful lot of different games, and the second thing was that they were almost all primary school games. The only one that survived into secondary school was British Bulldog - otherwise the playground was used for just sitting/standing in groups and talking, or playing football.

I'd be interested to hear about any games or rhymes that other people remember, especially as there are now two things that I can't remember and that are really annoying me: firstly, what was the name of the game that was like 'it' (or 'tig' or 'tag') except that when you were tagged you had to stand still in an X shape until someone else freed you by crawling through your legs? Secondly, what were the rules to Red Rover? I remember that you formed up in two lines facing each other, and that after discussing tactics one line called out "Red Rover, Red Rover, I call [name] over", at which point somebody changed sides, but I'm struggling to work out the point of the whole thing.

I intend to add to this post as I have time and as I remember more games and rhymes.
