Climbing

I am now registered as a competent climber with two climbing walls. This means that two climbing centres have checked that I can put on a harness and boots, tie in to a rope correctly and belay another climber safely. It doesn't say anything about whether I can get off the ground...

I also now own my own harness (at a bargainous price for last year's model, which is pretty much identical to this year's in all the essentials), boots (at full price - ouch) and belay device, so I no longer need to hire equipment for indoor climbing.

I'm still working at climbs around the 5 mark. Yesterday I failed to get up a 5 but made a reasonable job of a 5+ (I went up cleanly apart from the point where I had a sudden mental blank and forgot mid-move where it was I wanted to put my hands and feet, and grabbed for random holds until I remembered - the alternative being falling off first). It's interesting how this sort of thing highlights the things you need to work on: in my case, that's pretty much everything at the moment, of course, but the reason I got stuck on the 5 yesterday was because I couldn't push up enough from a high foothold. Some sort of squatting exercise is indicated, I think.
