Fabric crafts

How difficult would it be for someone with a sewing machine but extremely rusty (and basic) sewing skills to make a bedspread for a double bed? I'd like to do some simple patchwork, but I don't really know much about what that would involve. The finished product should be attractive but relatively inexpensive, machine washable, and not made of something too fur-attracting. It doesn't have to be stuffed with anything, as I'm aiming for something to do the job of a throw, rather than the job of a quilt.
