I've just discovered Transformatrix by Patience Agbabi. It's not often I just randomly pick up a volume of poetry, but this caught my eye from a stand in the library, and I'm glad it did. The verse is fresh, vivid and engaging, and ranges from rap to sestinas, covering a wide variety of characters and subjects including joyriding, trips, air hostesses, 'foreignness' and poetry. The problem is that I don't know who I can share it with. It's the perfect time of year to discover a book that you would like to give someone, and I can't think of anyone to give it to. I obviously don't know enough poetry-reading people, which is quite sad, really. I spend three years of my life studying for a literature degree, and a few years later I can't find anyone who would appreciate random volumes of modern poetry. Maybe I'm just underestimating my friends.
