Finding, just as you're about to leave the house, that the cat is once again suffering from very smelly digestive trouble, necessitating a thorough cleaning of (a)the floor and (b)the cat, which will make you half an hour late for work. While you're suffering from sciatica (ow).

You have my deepest sympathies.

My nearest experience to that was a weekend when my husband and I both had flu and both dogs had foul, messy digestive trouble that necessitated baths every hour until we could finally get them seen by the vet on Monday. No one was happy that weekend.

I bet no-one was happy - that sounds horrible for all concerned! What sort of dogs are they?

My cat is long-haired, which makes it all much more difficult, although she's now getting used to being pinned down and cleaned. She objects, but not by trying to escape at all costs, thankfully.

They are Cavalier King Charles spaniels, so they are long haired and a mess to bathe. They are, however, far more docile than a cat when it comes to water. (They simply stand and look bedraggled, throwing in a full-body shiver now and then so as to look as pathetic as possible.)

I can't imagine how unpleasant the pinning down and cleaning must have been.

It was worse the first few times, when she kept struggling. These days she just moans a bit and tries to hide in the corner. I put rubber gloves on, pick her up, lay her down on one side, hold her scruff gently with one hand and wipe her down with a wet cloth/comb her with a metal comb with the other. It's still pretty smelly, though.

A friend of the family used to keep King Charleses when I was growing up. They were very friendly little things, if somewhat comical. They were black and tans, with great eyebrows.
