Ours, too! The girls catch every ladybird they see and put it on the roses, where a great spread is spread out for them. Cute as they look, they're really vicious predators. I saw a ladybird the other day devouring an aphid with the glee of a cat devouring a mouse-- I was surprised that I couldn't hear it growling.
That's fascinating - I haven't seen ladybirds with their prey. In fact, I've only seen one ladybird at all this year, which is slightly worrying. Are they becoming scarce?
It may just be an off year: last year our garden was practically overrun with ladybirds, and we found lots of them dead, presumably of hunger. Now that the aphids have free rein to breed, the ladybirds that are there will be fat and prosperous and lay lots of eggs and we'll hopefully have a normal situation again next year.
